If you visit Doornbosch, don’t miss out on a visit to nearby Baardskeerdersbos! I was listening to a friend regaling his adventures of his days driving a tour bus. He was delighted when they were welcomed to Rusty’s Pub in Bbos, and arrived to find the potjies bubbling, and foot tapping music played by Bbos’s very own band, The Bbos Orkes. The legendary Manie Boontjies who owned the local general dealers store and popular Drankwinkel, was joined by several local band members. Guests experienced local “boeremusiek” – guitar, banjo, concertina and accordion. It wasn’t long before the dance floor was full of swirling and twirling langarm boere or local characters such as Barend Boggel, Snoekies, the legendary horse trainer, and many others. If there was the slightest chance of a get together, the word would quickly spread.
Today Marietjies Pub is the place to go, a place where old meets new. Famous for its legendary, huge breakfast portions as well as a variety of regular pub food. Marietjie, a local herself, is well liked, but takes no nonsense and has been known to physically remove any troublemakers! Don’t be surprised if a hen or tame lamb wanders through the restaurant, or a local farmer’s sheep dog suddenly dashes out from under a bar stool. People travel far and wide to experience remnants of life in a bygone era. Today the popular village is home to many artists or those who just enjoy the quieter life.
